Questions

How many school, university, government and nonprofit WARN notices were posted in 2026?

164 notices from schools, charter networks, colleges and universities, government agencies and authorities, government contractors, and nonprofits and charities in 15 of the 25 states we cover, up to Nov 3, 2026. Together they name 7,172 workers, and 27 are listed as closures. By type: government contractors, 32 notices and 3,209 workers; schools, colleges and universities, 49 notices and 1,990 workers; nonprofits and charities, 80 notices and 1,523 workers; government agencies and authorities, 3 notices and 450 workers.

What was the largest school, government or nonprofit layoff notice of 2026?

Lourdes University in Ohio, naming 387 workers, posted Mar 13, 2026.

Which employer in this group filed the most WARN notices in 2026?

EBALDC (East Bay Asian Local Development Corp.), with 19 notices naming 82 workers in 1 state. Universities, charter networks and nonprofits often file one notice per building or program, so one decision can show up as many rows. By workers named, the largest is Amentum, with 637 across 7 notices.

Which state has the most school, government and nonprofit layoff notices in 2026?

California, with 107 notices naming 1,929 workers. States that publish no industry field are matched by employer name only, so notices there may be undercounted.

Why are there so few government agencies and public school districts?

The federal WARN Act covers private businesses and, in some cases, public and quasi-public entities that operate separately from a government. Federal, state and local government bodies that provide public services are generally not required to file, so public school districts, cities and state agencies rarely appear in state WARN lists. Most government-related rows here are contractors that run federal programs, bases, labs and call centers, plus public authorities and districts that chose to file or are covered under state law. Some state laws reach further than the federal one.

Which employers count here?

Private and charter schools, colleges and universities (including their offices, labs and clinics), Head Start and Job Corps operators, government agencies, public authorities and districts, federal and state government contractors such as GDIT, Leidos, Peraton, Amentum and Maximus, and nonprofits and charities such as YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, Catholic Charities, refugee resettlement agencies and community development groups, matched by employer name and, where the state publishes it, an educational services or public administration industry field or code (NAICS 61, 92 or 8131 to 8134). Hospitals and health systems, even nonprofit ones, are on the healthcare page. School caterers such as Sodexo and Aramark are on the hospitality page, and school bus contractors, school suppliers, for-profit after-school vendors and edtech companies are left out. Contractors whose work is mainly software or engineering can also appear on the tech page. It is a keyword match, so check each row's source link.
